Curiousty Corner In 1843 Wingham became the first official town to be surveyed in the Manning Valley. It was proclaimed in 1844 and named after a seventh century English village in Kent. Its layout was also very English and centred around a village common. Wingham's growth was slow. It gained a post office and police hut in 1856 and a school in 1864. Its population reached 90 by 1866. In 1889 the Australian Hotel was established, a post office in 1884 and the first bank. All are still standing. The Commercial Bank established in 1880 is today the National Bank. In 1885, Wingham was proclaimed a town. Four years later it was incorporated as a municipality
