Curiousty Corner Built by John Fawkner in 1824, it was named the Cornwall Hotel and it is thought to be the oldest brick building in the city. It originally housed 23 rooms including a bar. It was within these walls in 1835 that John Batman and his friends agreed to cross Bass Strait and establish a "village" that some time after became the City of Melbourne. From here too, the abolitionist movement was launched in 1850 passing a resolution which spelt the end of transportation. In 1856, the Cornwall Assembly Rooms opened inside the hotel for theatrical performances and became well known as one of the best houses of entertainment in Van Diemen's Land. Situated in the heart of Launceston, the Batman Fawkner is only 5 minutes walk from Tasmania's premier shopping precinct. Only 15 minutes walk from Tasmania's second most visited tourist attraction, the magnificent Cataract Gorge
